If you are new to our weekly newsletters, here is some information about us. We have added all our past newsletters to our blog so if you want to you can read more about my irrational fear of roaches or how I lost my keys and found them in an unusual place.
|June 26th will be the first anniversary of our store opening. One… Year… People!!?!?! Some days it feels like no time has passed at all, and some days I feel like our business is already 14 years old. There’s not much in between that.|
While the 26th was the first day we officially opened, we will always remember our first store customers. It was the 24th, and we were cleaning up, moving things, and probably crying a little when two lovely sisters walked right through the door and straight to our crochet hooks.
We were a bit shocked and not sure what to do. So we did what anyone else in our position would do. We said hi, can we help you?
They were looking for Kollage Crochet Hooks and had looked us up on Louet’s retailer site. Louet had just sold the needles and hooks division, and they wanted to make sure they had all the hooks.
We explained that we weren’t officially open yet, but if they were willing, we would love to test out our check out system with them. They agreed – Anne and Pat are still regulars at our shop. We love them!
When we set out to open this shop, we envisioned a place that felt safe, open, and welcoming. We achieved that, and so much more. Thank you to the friends that we have made this year and the continued support from all our customers.
I don’t know what’s going to happen in the next year. We are navigating uncharted waters, and it’s scary. I’m glad we are doing it with you.
PS: We’ve got a lot better at Macrame. 😉
SECRET SOCIETY OF CRAFTERS
I have canceled Zoom meetups because we have a core group of crafters that get together on Wednesdays and Sundays at 10 AM in front of the store. They are physically distancing in the shade with lawn chairs.
You’re welcome to join them. It’s open to everyone. I’ll be changing our calendar to reflect the new day of the week. If you would like more information or want a reminder of the time or any changes, let me know, and we’ll put you on “the list.”
Kids are the Best Teachers
Last week we had a Pom Pom Camp from 1 to 4 pm. We had six kids from 7 to 11 years old. On Tuesday of last week, we had Ben and Jerry’s start their camp dyeing yarn with Koolaid and natural dyes. We are exhausted!
These kids, though, wow. They dive in and rarely have expectations or are intimidated by anything. Yeah, some yarn got muddied, some pom poms fell apart, but they keep going. And they did it with their masks on! If a 7-year-old can do it, we can too. WE CAN TOO!
Look at these creations. Not only do they look magnificent, but they also smell amazing! There are two camps left if anyone is interesting in signing up.
Let’s not forget the Pom Pom Families
Note: The green one is my phone’s home screen. I love him so much.
We had a little leftover while trimming the best pom-poms ever. Sophie and Stella are twins, and with face masks on, I couldn’t tell them apart at all.
Unrelated, we decided we want a mask like Scout’s.
DYE TO ORDER
Excuse me, but what does that mean?
Thanks for asking! Dyed to order is new to us, so clearly, it’s new to you too. I was wrong when I said I didn’t want to dye for others. I’m actually good at it. Our new Dye To Order colors are great when you need sweater quantity, or you love that colorway but wish it was in <insert here> weight.
You can see the colors we offer in our store or on our website. We will take your order in either place and dye it up for you. It may take a bit longer than taking yarn right off the shelf, but you get exactly what you want. *jazz hands*
4th Annual 4-day KAL!
OK! I AM GOING TO DO THIS! Please don’t make me do it alone. 😀
I have set up a Discord Group for us to communicate our progress with this KAL. (If you are already part of Discord, you will need to click on the link to access the private group. If you’re not part of Discord, it’s easy to set up and free. Click on the link and set up an account).
The pattern release date is July 1st, and the KAL will start on July 4th.
Grab some yarn from your stash or us, and let’s make a sweater in 4 days! (or months whatever) Here’s more information:
Olive Knits is hosting the 4th Annual 4 Day Sweater KAL. The presale of the pattern is through the end of the month. The official cast on is July 4th. Then you knit madly for four days. (disclaimer the KAL ends August 1st, so don’t panic!)
If you’re interested, we can order the pattern for you and help with any yarn choices. 🙂
I have been learning a lot about Black History and am embarrassed to say that I am unaware of so many things. That’s OK because I can learn at any age!
For June, we are donating 25% of all profits to Black Emotional and Mental Health Collective. We are well over $1,000 so far. Profits include anything that we sell in our store. (Maybe on our Anniversary we will have a sale? Stay tuned) 🙂
“BEAM’s mission is to remove the barriers that Black people experience getting access to or staying connected with emotional health care and healing. We do this through healing justice-based organizing, education, training, grantmaking, and advocacy. “
